Hisarya, ancient Roman Spa Town.

Something which I didn’t know before I moved to Bulgaria was how rich the country is in Roman ruins. There are more Roman sites here than you can shake a stick at. Until recently, the subway under the main road which I walk through everyday was decorated quite randomly with a couple of old Roman pillars. Now I think about it, I have no idea why or where they went…I guess there was a good reason for their removal.

Anyway, this brings me to Hisarya…Hisar…whichever, both seem accepted…which has an amazingly well-preserved Roman wall and the foundations of many of the buildings which were housed within it. The Romans came here to take advantage of the mineral waters and people are still coming today to visit the many hotel complexes and their mineral baths. There is also a very pretty garden and lots of eateries where you can sit and watch the world go by…

One of my favourite places…and fortunately, very close to Plovdiv.
